Core framework
CSI proposes a sequence of analytical stages rather than a single classification step. Each stage narrows the gap between raw observations and a theoretically meaningful estimate of the collective condition.

Composition logic
A collective state is not established merely by averaging individual scores. CSI requires an explicit account of how participant-level signals, relationships, and temporal patterns combine into a group-level construct.
Depending on the phenomenon, composition may be additive, configural, relational, emergent, or contingent on subgroups and context. The appropriate logic must be theoretically justified rather than assumed.
Framework assumptions
The relevant participants and shared environment can be defined with sufficient clarity.
The target condition arises partly from interaction rather than from isolated individual attributes alone.
The interaction process leaves evidence relevant to the collective construct.
The observation window is aligned with how quickly the collective state forms and changes.
Interpretation accounts for differences in task, setting, hierarchy, incentives, and culture.
The estimate can be tested against defensible external measures or expert criteria.
Design principles
Illustrative example
A system might observe reduced cross-subgroup communication, declining reciprocity, increasingly polarized language, persistent coordination delays, and repeated disagreement across comparable work periods.
CSI would not treat any one signal as proof of fragmentation. Instead, it would combine the relational, temporal, linguistic, and contextual evidence; compare competing interpretations; estimate uncertainty; and surface the result for accountable human review.
Framework status
The framework provides a theoretical and methodological structure. Its propositions, measures, and predictive value remain subject to scholarly review and empirical testing.
